Changelog

Full release history for Daytime Notes Pro, which includes every Free release plus Pro-only updates. All changes apply to both Free and Pro versions unless marked Free only or Pro only. If you’re using the free plugin, your own installed copy shows a filtered version of this list under Settings → Daytime Notes → Changelog, with Pro-only entries left out.

[1.0.2] — 2026-10-19

Security

  • Pro only The Notes Manager settings lock is now enforced, not just shown. Other admins already saw “Settings are managed by the Notes Manager” instead of the settings form, but could still change settings by sending them to WordPress directly. Now those changes are refused, as are the export, orphaned-note cleanup, stuck-notification cleanup and completed-attachment cleanup tools on the same page.
  • Pro only Fixed: a Notes Manager who isn’t an administrator (for example, an Editor) no longer locks the settings page. They can’t open settings themselves, so the lock was leaving nobody able to change them. Only an administrator Notes Manager locks the settings now; any Notes Manager still sees every note.

[1.0.1] — 2026-10-07

Added

  • Pro only Licences, checkout and updates now run through Freemius. Enter your licence key under Settings > Daytime Notes after activating Pro; updates then arrive in the dashboard as usual.
  • Pro only Without an active licence (not yet activated, or cancelled or refunded), Pro pauses instead of running, and nothing is deleted. A notice explains why and offers to activate a licence or switch to the free version in one click. The free version uses the same notes, so nothing is lost. An expired licence keeps Pro working; it just stops updates and support.

Changed

  • Every email that lists a page now links to it right at the page’s name: the title is a link, followed by “Open page →”, as well as the button below its notes. Links open the page with the notes panel already showing, and use the page’s current address, so they keep working if the site has moved since the note was made.
  • Emails now use the Daytime Notes yellow instead of the old purple: a pale yellow header with a yellow stripe (so the logo stands out), yellow buttons with dark text like the plugin’s own, yellow note edges, and dark gold links that stay easy to read.
  • Pro only The daily activity digest now says which page each change was on, with a link, and no longer shows raw @usernames in note text, matching the other emails.
  • Someone who isn’t logged in and follows a link to a page’s notes (from an email or “Pages with notes”) is taken to the WordPress login first, then straight back to the page with the notes panel open.
  • The Save Note button (and the OK/Delete buttons in the plugin’s pop-up messages) is now the same yellow as Send Notifications, with the same hover, instead of the one-off blue. The note text box’s highlight while typing is yellow to match, instead of blue, and still clearly visible.
  • The notes panel now remembers where you dragged it. It reopens in the same place after a refresh or on another page, moving back on screen if the window is now smaller. This is remembered per browser, and a panel you’ve never dragged still opens at the top right.
  • The notes button and panel are hidden on screens narrower than 600px (phones), where there isn’t room to use them. The panel closes there, so taps on the page work normally, and reopens as you left it if the window widens again. Whether you last had it open or closed isn’t changed.
  • When the panel scrolls up to a note (e.g. hovering its element on the page), the note now stops 12px below the Open/Completed tabs, the same gap as between notes, instead of touching their underline.
  • @mention suggestions now say “No matches for @…” when nobody matches what’s been typed, instead of showing nothing, so it’s clear the search ran. Escape still closes it.

Security

  • Pro only The CSV export now protects against spreadsheet formula injection. A note (or page title) that starts with =, +, - or @ is exported with a leading apostrophe, so Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets show it as text instead of running it as a formula. The notes themselves aren’t changed.
  • Free only Notes marked as personal, for example on a site that has switched editions, now stay private: only their author and the person they mention can see, reply to, edit or complete them. Previously they showed to every notes user. New notes still can’t be marked personal in this edition.

Fixed

  • Pro only Instant reply emails left out who replied (“replied to your note” with no name). They now name the person.
  • Pro only The daily activity digest cut long notes off mid-word with no sign anything was missing. They’re now shortened at the last whole word, with a “…”.
  • Pro only The attachment picker in the note form said “No file chosen” even after a file was attached, and some themes restyled it to look out of place. It’s now an “Add files” row that matches the attached files below it.
  • The notification summary email’s subject said “Page Notes”, the plugin’s old name. It now says “You have 3 new notes on [site]”.
  • Deleting one edition while the other is active (for example, deleting Pro after switching to the free version) no longer removes the Reviewer role, which used to turn reviewers into Subscribers, and never deletes the shared notes, even with “Remove all plugin settings and data when uninstalled” ticked.
  • Closing the notes panel after arriving from a “Pages with notes” link (or the dashboard widget) now sticks — refreshing the page no longer reopens it. The link’s ?notes=active parameter is removed from the address bar as soon as the panel opens; whether the panel is open on refresh is remembered as before.

[1.0.0] — 2026-10-05

Added

  • Two-way highlighting between the notes panel and the page — while the panel’s open, every open note’s element on the page shows a yellow outline (completed notes don’t get one; reopening a note brings it back). Hovering a note in the panel highlights its element (scrolling to it only if it’s off screen), and hovering a noted element on the page scrolls the panel to and highlights the matching note. Where noted elements are nested, the innermost one wins. The outlines never block clicks, so you can still select and note anything inside a noted section
  • The matching note in the panel gets a clear static highlight (warmer background, stronger border) as well as the pulse, so it stands out even when animation is off
  • Respects the “reduce motion” setting — the highlight pulses are switched off for visitors who prefer reduced motion, leaving the static highlights in place
  • @mention suggestions can be picked from the keyboard: the top match is highlighted as soon as the list appears, so Enter adds it; the arrow keys choose another, and Escape closes the list without closing the note form
  • The Send Notifications button pulses briefly when a new notification is added (a static highlight instead for reduced motion)

Changed

  • “Pages with Notes” is now a compact one-line menu: a summary button (“4 pages | 13 notes”, counting open notes) that slides open to show every page with notes, in the same style as before. The current page is marked “You’re here”, and the “Hide completed” checkbox for pages now lives inside the menu. A long list of pages no longer pushes the current page’s notes out of view
  • The current page’s notes are split into Open and Completed tabs with live counts, replacing the “Notes on This Page” heading and its “Hide completed” checkbox. Completing or reopening a note moves it to the other tab, adding a note switches to Open so it’s visible, and your chosen tab is remembered
  • The pages button stays fixed at the top of the panel, and the Open/Completed tabs pin just below it while the notes scroll. With the pages menu open, every page is shown and the panel scrolls beneath the pages button, without a separate scrollbar for the list
  • Calmer panel header: a faint dot-grid texture (which strengthens on hover) now signals that the header can be dragged, replacing the drag-handle icon; the Send Notifications button is a darker yellow that sits with the header instead of a contrasting blue, without its envelope icon; the close button is an outlined square matching the other panel buttons, with a properly centred ×. Both header buttons grow slightly on hover
  • The panel always reserves room for its scrollbar, so content no longer shifts sideways when a scrollbar appears on systems that show them permanently (Windows, or macOS set to always show scroll bars)
  • Pro only Refreshed styling for the attachment file picker in the note form, and each picked file now shows a square preview — images are cropped to fit, other files show a file icon. Previews are made in the browser from the picked file; nothing extra is uploaded
  • Pro only More attachment types: PowerPoint (PPTX), CSV, and OpenOffice/LibreOffice documents (ODT, ODS, ODP). The file picker now offers only accepted types, and a ⓘ beside “Attachments” lists them along with the site’s current file count and size limits (taken from settings, so it always matches)
  • Pro only HEIC photos (iPhone/Mac) are converted to JPG on upload so they display in every browser — offered only when the server’s ImageMagick can read HEIC; otherwise iPhones convert to JPG themselves

Security

  • Names in the @mention suggestion list are HTML-escaped before display (defence in depth — WordPress already strips HTML from names when they’re saved)
  • @mentions are no longer available to reviewer-tier users (anyone with use_daytime_notes but not edit_posts/manage_options — i.e. the Reviewer role and any similarly-scoped custom role) — the mention search endpoint, mention resolution on save/edit, and the autocomplete dropdown are all suppressed for them. Reviewers typically send notes to one person who sees them anyway, so mentioning wasn’t a needed capability, and the search endpoint was handing back other users’ real WordPress usernames to whoever was typing, regardless of their role — a real disclosure risk, not just a cosmetic one

Fixed

  • Hovering a note in the panel no longer makes the page judder — it only scrolls when the note’s element is off screen, and only once per note
  • The close button now has an accessible name (“Close notes panel”) instead of being read out as “times”
  • The Send Notifications button sets its own font, so themes that style buttons (uppercase, serif, etc.) no longer restyle it
  • Notes panel headings (the panel title, its section headings, and the Add Note form’s title) had no explicit font-family, so they inherited the host theme’s own heading font instead of the plugin’s intended typography

[0.9.1] — 2026-08-31

Fixed

  • DAYTIME_NOTES_VERSION was left at a stale pre-launch value instead of matching the 0.9.0 plugin header — this was shown as the “Plugin Version” on the Settings page and used for asset cache-busting
  • @mentions and “Assigned to” labels could show a user’s raw username instead of their configured WordPress display name — name resolution now checks WordPress’s own “Display name publicly as” setting first, matching what users actually configure on their profile
  • Notification emails’ footer text could read as a duplicated site/plugin name (e.g. “sent by Daytime Notes Daytime Notes”)
  • The notes panel’s resize handle could become unreachable behind the notes list’s own scrollbar; the panel header also now uses a flex layout instead of absolutely-positioned action buttons, fixing title/button overlap

[0.9.0] — 2026-07-22

Added

  • Pro only Personal Notes — mark a note Personal to keep it out of the general shared view. Its audience is fixed at creation (the creator, plus whoever they @mention in that original note) and can’t be expanded later — @mentions don’t function in replies to a Personal note. The designated Notes Manager can still see Personal notes, for full-site oversight
  • Notes now show a friendly relative timestamp (“2 hours”, “3 days”) by default — click one to see the exact date/time, hover to preview whichever format isn’t currently showing

Changed

  • Free only The in-admin Changelog tab and readme.txt no longer show the pre-0.9.0 history (versions 0.1.0–0.8.5) — that history describes a single undifferentiated plugin Free never actually was, and mentioned things (the old update checker, attachments) that are Pro-only today. Pro keeps the full history, since Pro is that project’s continuous successor
  • Free (daytime-notes.php) and Pro (daytime-notes-pro.php) now ship from one shared codebase — core functionality lives in includes/core/*.php, Pro-only functionality in includes/pro/*.php, composed per edition at build time via build.sh --edition=free|pro
  • Custom “Daytime Notes Reviewer” accounts are redirected out of wp-admin to the front end, and no longer see a “Dashboard” link in the admin bar — they never had a reason to see wp-admin at all
  • Free’s settings page includes a permanent, non-dismissible line pointing to Daytime Notes Pro
  • Activating Pro over an active Free install automatically deactivates Free, migrates existing data safely, and shows a one-time confirmation notice
  • Changelog entries can now be tagged [Free]/[Pro] — the in-admin Changelog tab and the public changelog on daytimenotes.com both filter to the entries relevant to that edition, and a version made up entirely of one edition’s entries doesn’t appear at all for the other

Changed

  • 0.9.0 marks the actual product launch; the versions below are this plugin’s pre-launch personal-project history (only ever installed on test sites, which were replaced rather than upgraded in place)

Pre-launch history (2025 – mid 2026)

Before its public launch at 0.9.0, Daytime Notes was a personal project used only on test sites. These early versions are kept here for completeness.

[0.8.5] — 2026-07-09

Added

  • Mention notifications for a user who has Daytime Notes disabled now stay queued instead of being sent (or silently dropped). The moment that user re-enables Daytime Notes in their profile, every note that mentioned them is delivered as a single grouped summary email

Fixed

  • Profile page “Enable Daytime Notes” checkbox was showing unchecked for accounts that had never touched the setting, even though those accounts were actually enabled by default — the displayed value now matches the real default
  • “Pages with notes” cleanup could delete notes on pages that still existed but weren’t singular posts (search results, archives, a homepage with no static front page set) — a failed url_to_postid() lookup was being treated as proof the page was deleted. Deletion now only happens when a recorded page ID is confirmed missing or trashed via get_post()

[0.8.4] — 2026-06-17

Improved

  • Settings page is now restricted to the Notes Manager once one is assigned — other admins see a message naming the Notes Manager with a mailto link to contact them
  • Notes Manager card moved to the top of the settings form with updated description clarifying the access restriction
  • Changelog tab remains accessible to all admins regardless of Notes Manager setting

Fixed

  • Complete and Delete buttons on notes the current user cannot act on now render as disabled (greyed out with a tooltip) instead of appearing active and failing with a permission error on click
  • anyoneCanComplete setting is now passed to the client so the Complete button permission is computed correctly — previously the button was always active regardless of the “Unassigned Note Completion” setting
  • Applies to both top-level notes and replies
  • @mention not resolving when a username contains spaces (e.g. “Brad Bloom”) — the extraction regex was stopping at the first space, so assigned_to was saved as NULL and no pending notification was queued. Now tries progressively shorter word combinations until a matching user_login is found
  • Mention display stripping updated to match the same character set, and now accepts the known username so multi-word mentions are removed cleanly from note display text
  • Send Notifications button was present in the DOM with the correct count but visually hidden — clearing the inline style fell back to the CSS display: none default; now explicitly sets display: block when notifications are pending

[0.8.3] — 2026-04-17

Fixed

  • Completion notifications (sent when a note is marked done) were permanently stuck in the queue because send_completion_email() called wp_mail() without returning its result — the caller always saw null (falsy) and never marked the record as sent
  • “Clear Stuck Notifications” in Settings now also catches completion records whose referenced note has since been deleted

[0.8.2] — 2026-04-03

Improved

  • Element highlighting replaced with a fixed-position overlay ring (#pn-highlight-ring) that uses getBoundingClientRect() to position itself precisely over the target element — fixes the highlight not appearing on <img> elements and elements inside overflow: hidden containers where CSS outline and box-shadow were being clipped
  • Highlight ring sits above page content but below the Daytime Notes panel (z-index: 99998) so it never obscures the notes list
  • Ring has a gentle pulse animation (outline expands and contracts) to draw the eye to the highlighted element
  • Ring is suppressed during smooth scroll and only appears once the page has settled at the target element, preventing the jarring “chasing” effect seen previously
  • Fixed: Deleting a note with a pending @mention notification now correctly hides the Send Notifications button if no other pending notifications remain

[0.8.1] — 2026-04-01

Added

  • Dashboard widget — appears on the WordPress admin dashboard for all Daytime Notes users
  • Regular users see their open notes (created or assigned to them), grouped with a direct link to each page with the notes panel pre-opened
  • Notes Manager and admins also see a per-user summary table showing open and completed note counts across all users

Improved

  • Dashboard widget title bar is now styled in Daytime Notes yellow (#ffc107) to match the plugin’s accent colour
  • Attachments are now visible and manageable in the edit note dialogue — existing files display with an inline delete button, and new files can be added during editing
  • Cancelling or saving an edit correctly resets the attachment area and label
  • Uploaded files are now stored in per-note subfolders (note-{id}/) inside the private uploads directory, preventing filename collisions between notes
  • Pending files (before a note is saved) are held in a per-user temp folder (temp/user-{id}/) and moved to the note folder automatically when the note is saved
  • File upload “Choose Files” button is smaller with rounded corners, matching the panel’s compact UI

Fixed

  • Dashboard widget “Daytime Notes settings” link no longer shown to non-admin users (caused a permissions error for reviewers)
  • Dashboard widget manager table header background had a double ## typo in the CSS colour value
  • Image thumbnails in the notes panel now open the full image in a new tab when clicked — previously the &download=1 flag caused the browser to download instead of display
  • Upload handler now explicitly checks whether the DB table exists before inserting, then runs migrations as a fallback if it doesn’t — closes the remaining gap where the table was not yet created at upload time
  • Pre-upload no longer returns a false success with id=0 when the DB insert fails; it now returns a proper error so the file shows as failed in the upload list rather than appearing to succeed silently
  • Attachment upload silently returning id=0 when the database table didn’t exist — the pre-upload handler now detects a failed DB insert, runs the migration as a fallback, and retries. If it still fails, it returns a proper error so the file shows as failed rather than appearing to succeed without being saved.
  • Attachments not displaying in the notes panel after upload — the database table was only created on first activation and was missing for sites that updated via zip upload rather than deactivate/reactivate. A migration now runs automatically when the stored DB version doesn’t match the current version.

[0.8.0] — 2026-04-01

Added

  • File attachments — users can attach files to notes (images, PDFs, Word, Excel, text, zip)
  • Private uploads folder (wp-content/uploads/daytime-notes/) with .htaccess protection — files are not publicly accessible via direct URL
  • Nonce-protected file serve handler (pn_serve_attachment) — streams private files securely to authorised users; images render as inline thumbnails in the notes panel
  • Attachment delete button — uploaders and the Notes Manager can delete individual files
  • wp_daytime_notes_attachments database table — stores attachment metadata (note ID, filename, file type, file size, uploader, timestamp)
  • File Attachments card in Settings > Daytime Notes with:
  • Client-side file validation — enforces count and size limits before upload with clear error messages
  • File preview list below the file input shows selected filenames and sizes before saving
  • Attachments automatically deleted when a note is deleted or when a post/page is trashed
  • Full cleanup on uninstall (when data deletion is enabled) — drops table and removes uploads folder

Improved

  • File attachments now accumulate across multiple picks — selecting files from a second folder no longer clears the first selection
  • Files upload immediately on selection via XHR with a per-file progress bar and live percentage
  • Save button disabled and shows “Uploading…” until all uploads complete, preventing submission with unfinished files
  • Each queued file has an × button — aborts upload if still in progress, deletes from server if already complete
  • Cancelling the note form automatically deletes any already-uploaded pending files from the server, leaving no orphaned files
  • Orphaned pending attachments (note_id = 0, older than 2 hours) cleaned up automatically on each upload request

[0.7.3] — 2026-03-19

Added

  • “Hide completed” checkbox in the Pages with Notes section — hides fully-completed pages from the list, matching the existing toggle on the notes section
  • Update checker — plugin now checks muzkore.com for new versions and shows standard WordPress update notifications
  • Changelog tab in Settings > Daytime Notes — view version history with colour-coded badges without leaving WordPress

Changed

  • Removed assets/.DS_Store from version control

Improved

  • Settings page cards widened from 520px to 720px to reduce vertical scrolling on wider screens

Fixed

  • Escape output linting error in changelog renderer — added phpcs:ignore with explanation since render_changelog() generates its own escaped HTML
  • readme.txt tested-up-to value corrected to major version only (6.9 not 6.9.4) per WordPress guidelines
  • Stuck notification count when a reply’s parent note has been deleted — the reply is now correctly marked as undeliverable and cleared from the queue on send
  • “Clear Stuck Notifications” now also catches reply notifications where the parent note itself was deleted (previously only caught deleted parent authors)
  • Element highlighting now works for notes attached to images, icons, SVGs, and other elements with no text content — fingerprint search was skipping these due to an empty-string falsy check
  • Element fingerprint search confidence threshold lowered from >30 to >=20, so elements identifiable only by class or structural signals (not text) are now correctly recovered

Confirmed

  • Tested and confirmed compatible with WordPress 6.9.4

[0.7.2] — 2026-03-10

Added

  • “Clear Stuck Notifications” button in Settings > Data Management for manual cleanup

Fixed

  • Editing a note with a new or changed @mention now re-queues the notification for the newly mentioned user
  • Instant email is sent immediately on edit when a new @mention is added (if instant notifications are enabled)
  • Stuck notifications (queued for deleted users) now automatically clear when Send Notifications is clicked
  • Send Notifications button no longer shows a count for notifications that cannot be delivered

[0.7.1] — 2026-02-15

  • Added mobile-responsive media queries for email clients that support them
  • Note timestamps now display date and time (e.g., “21/01/2026 7:34PM”) instead of date only

Fixed

  • Prevent duplicate note submissions when save button is clicked multiple times
  • Notes now appear instantly after saving (optimistic UI) instead of reloading all notes
  • Critical bug where notes created with fallback selector strategy would not link to elements for other users
  • Archive pages (categories, tags, etc.) no longer confuse note associations with posts/pages sharing the same ID
  • Complete button now responds instantly (optimistic UI update instead of waiting for server)

[0.5.1] — 2025-12-20

Added

  • Send Notifications button now shows pending count, e.g. “Send Notifications (3)”
