Answers to common questions about Daytime Notes Pro. Using the free version? Its FAQ is on WordPress.org.
Frequently Asked Questions

Free vs Pro
What does Pro add to the free version?
The free version is built for one person working with one client. Pro adds what teams and agencies need:
- A Notes Manager role that can see every note across a project
- File attachments on notes
- Personal notes that the client doesn’t see
- Control over which roles and users can use Daytime Notes
- Configurable notifications: instant emails, your own send interval, task reminders and a daily digest
- Export to CSV or JSON
Why is there a paid version at all?
The free version solved the problem I had: one developer handing a site to one client for review. As more people used it, they asked for things it was never built for, like oversight across a whole project, attachments, and private working notes. Those are team-sized problems. Rather than complicate a plugin that already worked, I kept the free version as it is and built Pro on top of it.
Can I upgrade from the free version without losing my notes?
Absolutely. Once you install and activate the Pro version, the free version will be de-activated and the notes will be imported into the pro version.
What happens if my Pro licence expires?
If your Pro licence expires, Daytime Notes Pro keeps working, with every Pro feature you already have. You won’t receive updates, new features or Pro support until you renew.
Getting Started
Do I need to configure settings to use the plugin?
No. Install, activate, and you’re ready to go. Pro’s extra settings for roles, notifications and data are there when your team needs them, not before. For a simple developer–client setup, create a Reviewer account and start leaving notes.
Do I have to use @mentions or email notifications?
No, both are optional. Without @mentions, a note is general feedback that everyone with access can see. Without email, people can log in and check the notes panel directly.
Access & Permissions
Who can see the notes?
Only logged-in users who have Daytime Notes enabled on their account. By default that’s Administrators, Editors, Authors, Contributors, and anyone with the Daytime Notes Reviewer role, which gives clients access without edit permissions.
Can I choose exactly who has access?
Yes. In Settings → Daytime Notes, you choose which roles have access, and you can give individual users access regardless of their role.
What is the Notes Manager role?
It gives one person oversight of a whole project. The Notes Manager sees every note, including Personal notes, so a project lead never has to piece together feedback from different people.
Can I make a note private?
Yes. Mark it ‘Personal’ when creating it. It’s then only visible to you and anyone you @mention in that original note; replies can’t add new people to the audience. One exception: a Personal note is still visible to the designated Notes Manager, since that role exists for full oversight of a project. Personal hides a note from the rest of the team, not from oversight.
Can I attach files to notes?
A variety of documents including PDF, media files and zip archives can be attached to notes. The file number and storage per note can be adjusted in the settings.
Notifications
How do notifications work in Pro?
Daytime Notes doesn’t send an email for every note. Notifications wait in a queue, and each person gets one summary email listing everything waiting for them, grouped by page, with a link straight to each page. Twenty notes means one email, not twenty.
These events add a notification to the queue:
- Mentions: someone @mentions you in a note.
- Replies: someone replies to your note.
- Completions: someone marks your note as done. You’re not told if you completed it yourself.
By default, the queue is sent in two ways:
- The ‘Send Notifications’ button in the notes panel. The number beside it shows how many are waiting. When an admin clicks it, everything in the queue goes out. When anyone else clicks it, only notifications from their own notes go out.
- Automatically every four hours, as a safety net, so nothing sits in the queue if nobody clicks the button.
If someone has notes switched off in their profile, their notifications are held. They arrive as a single summary when that person switches notes back on.
Why do notification emails sometimes take a while to arrive?
Daytime Notes hands each email to WordPress’s built-in mail function. From there, delivery speed depends on your host’s mail setup, not the plugin. If delays keep happening, an SMTP plugin such as WP Mail SMTP or FluentSMTP, connected to a transactional email service like Amazon SES, Mailgun or Postmark, usually fixes it.
Data & Export
Can I export my notes?
Yes. Settings → Daytime Notes → Export Notes exports every note to CSV or JSON, including assignments, completion status and timestamps.
What happens to my data if I uninstall?
Your notes and settings stay in the database. Uninstalling removes the plugin, not your data, so if you reinstall later everything is still there.
If you want your data removed completely, go to Settings → Daytime Notes → Data Management and tick the option to delete all data on uninstall before you uninstall. This can’t be undone.
Anyone with the Daytime Notes Reviewer role is moved to Subscriber when you uninstall, so nobody is left with a role that no longer exists.
Compatibility
Isn't this the same as the Notes feature in WordPress 6.9?
No. Core Notes are comments on blocks for people editing in Gutenberg. They’re private to the editor and never appear on the live site. Daytime Notes is for people who aren’t editing at all: a client or reviewer looking at the finished page, built with any page builder, with no editor access needed.
(The About page has the full comparison).
Does it work with my page builder?
Yes. Notes attach to the elements on the rendered page, not to builder data, so it works with Bricks, Elementor, Breakdance, Oxygen, Gutenberg and any theme.
What happens if the element a note is attached to changes or is removed?
The note stays in the notes panel, along with a record of where it was attached. You can leave a new note on the updated element at any time.
Security & Quality
Is Daytime Notes checked for security issues?
Yes. Every release goes through two separate checks:
- The official WordPress Plugin Check tool
- A dedicated security review for logic-level issues, such as broken access control, privilege escalation and insecure direct object references
Background
Why did you build Daytime Notes?
Client feedback kept arriving as one-line notes that could mean three different things. I was spending more time working out which page or element someone meant than making the fix. My page builder had a notes feature, but it wasn’t client-friendly. I wanted clients to leave feedback on the live page without seeing the WordPress dashboard, and I wanted it to work whatever was building the page. I couldn’t find a plugin that did that, so I built one.
Additionally, I wanted to be able to leave my own comments as I worked. This quickly became a major usage of the plugin.
